Astana is one of the most beautiful capital city of the world. It is modern and planned city, just like Brasilia in Brazil, Canberra in Australia or Washington in the United States. The idea of creation Astana belongs to President Nursultan Nazarbayev and the master plan of this city was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. The official reason for relocating capital to Astana was Almaty’s (previous capital) location in an earthquake-prone region. Also its close proximity to the Chinese border and Kazakhstan’s need to strengthen its hold on the north of the country with its large number of ethnic Russians made it logical from a strategic point of view. On December 10, 1997, the capital was officially transferred to Akmola, which was renamed into Astana in line with the Presidential Decree, signed on May 6, 1998.
In Astana we have lots of important buildings: the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and numerous government departments and agencies. The city is also home to many futuristic buildings, hotels and skyscrapers. Astana is a centre for sport and having been set to host the Expo 2017. Astana is a real bridge between Europe and Asia. The architectural concept of Astana was based on the idea of President Nursultan Nazarbayev implying a special Eurasian style of Astana should harmoniously combine the cultural traditions of both the East and the West. In 1999 Astana was awarded the title of the City of Peace by UNESCO.
